Taiwanese fermentation company DaBomb Protein Biotech Corp. has informed Feedinfo that it has broken ground this month on a new production site in Tainan, located very near its existing facility where the company develops and manufactures plant proteins (mainly soybean peptide protein), probiotics and post-biotics.

The new site will provide new fermentation capacities and produce protease under its Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) relationship for a US partner company which already operates in the feed enzyme space.

Speaking to us at Victam Asia/Health & Nutrition Asia 2024 in Bangkok, Alice Liu, CEO of DaBomb, said: “We aim for that new facility to be operational in 2025. And we hope to develop a close relationship with our US partner in the coming few years.”

“The new facility will also have a warehouse which will enable us to easily stock quantities of protease for the US partner,” added Wei-Chih Huang, Chief Technology Officer at DaBomb.

Huang also said that during this time, DaBomb is also investing in new equipment in the existing facility. This new equipment will be online as of June 2024.

“Our origins are lactic acid bacteria fermentation which has led to multiple applications. We applied the production technology of hydrolyzed peptides and started the liquid fermentation technology-based business in 2019 to produce higher functionality probiotics/post-biotics,” explained Liu.

The current Tainan factory, which has a production capacity of 36,000 tonnes/year, is the founding site of DaBomb Protein, which was established in 2001. 90% of the manufactured products are exported to Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia markets. DaBomb was listed on the Taiwan OTC market in September 2018.

Liu also said that until recently DaBomb was also operating a factory in Zhangzhou Changtai Industrial Zone, Fujian Province, China.

“Although the test-run production of the China factory was completed in 2019, sales lagged far behind due to the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown and African swine fever in 2020. We aborted the China business and production last June,” she commented, adding that for now, the plan is for DaBomb to keep all the knowhow in its Taiwan headquarters.
