Leading Indian cattle feed company Amul Dairy has entered India's poultry feed market, supplying product since 15 June 2023.
According to Dr. Babulal Bhanderi, animal nutritionist at Amul Dairy, the company’s years of experience in cattle feed production provided useful insights, helping in the development of its poultry feed range, which took six months to formulate.
Dr. Bhanderi said that Amul Dairy opted not to make new investments in new plant infrastructure. Instead, the company has commenced production of poultry feed in its existing cattle feed plants, namely Kanjari and Kapriwas in Gujarat state. He said the company aims to eventually produce 5,000 tonnes of poultry feed by 31 March 2024.
Dr. Bhanderi also said that his company is strategically expanding its poultry feed production capabilities. Currently, production has begun in Gujarat and Maharashtra, with upcoming plans to start production in Amul’s cattle feed plants in Punjab (first week of July 2023), West Bengal (July 2023), and Madhya Pradesh (August 2023).
Amul Dairy has a positive outlook for the poultry feed sector, considering the market size and volume. Looking ahead, the company has plans to construct new dedicated facilities for poultry feed after 4–5 years, added Dr. Bhanderi. Amul seeks to differentiate itself from other companies in this sector by offering completely vegetarian poultry feed. The company also has plans to use natural, homeopathic ingredients in its poultry feeds.
